Powder Talk: All About Dyotics Brow Henna

The basis of brow henna comes from the henna plant, but a number of ingredients are added to it to ensure that it becomes a fine spreadable mixture and stays on the skin for a long time. We've gathered the most frequently asked questions about brow henna powder here, so keep reading!

1. What are those white balls in the powder?

You may see some little white balls in your jar of Dyotics henna powder, and wonder what they are. These balls are gum, and they ensure that the henna powder binds with the water. For the best henna mixture, mix the powder thoroughly with hot water and let the mixture stand for 5-10 minutes. Have the balls still not dissolved after mixing well? You can use a microbrush to crush them. It's worth noting that these little pellets don't affect the result!

2. My older henna is much darker than a new jar in the same color...

When henna is exposed to oxygen, the powder slowly becomes darker over time in a process called oxidization. So the longer the jar is open, the darker the color of the brow henna becomes. This process has no effect on the result; it will not be darker than a jar you have just opened! However, the henna does lose some of its potency at a certain point, typically after 6 months.

3. The henna has a greenish-yellow glow. Why is this happening?

Pure henna is green, so if you start dyeing too soon without letting the mixture set long enough, you may see a somewhat green glow! To avoid this happening, mix the henna with warm-to-hot water and wait 5-10 minutes before you start dyeing to ensure that the mixture is well developed and has a nice brown color. Do the eyebrows still have a yellow-green glow afterwards? Keep in mind that this will have completely faded by the time the client is home! It could be that you may have rather white light in your salon, making it look greener than it really is.

4. Can you mix the colors?

Yes, you can mix all the colors of Dyotics Brow Henna. For example, add some Raven to make another color darker and ashier, or use Hazelnut to make a color warmer. Or maybe you find Taupe just a bit too light and Natural Brown again too dark? Then you can mix these two shades!

5. Can Dyotics Brow Henna expire?

Unopened jars will last for about two years, but after a jar of eyebrow henna is opened, you can use it for up to 6 months. If you use it after that, the brow henna will not work as well.

6. The powder in the jar is so light, even Ash Brown....

Always remember that the color of the powder does not say much about the result it gives, and as soon as you mix the powder with hot water, it will already get darker. And the longer you leave it, the darker it gets. That's because the color pigments in the powder only start to develop with the water. So it's true that powders are light in color when you've just opened a jar, including the darker colors! And as your jar is open longer, the powder gets darker and darker, as you read in question 2.
