As a eyebrow stylist, you make women prettier. One eyebrow at a time. It would be horrible if one of your customers develops an allergy after a henna eyebrow treatment in your salon. The only way to prevent this is by performing a patch test with every new customer.
Many people think that eyebrow henna is completely pure. Unfortunately, that is not true. Pure henna would mean that it should retract for hours, resulting in a red-brown print. Just think of the beautiful henna decorations in Eastern countries. That is why pigments have been added to brow henna to give the powder the nice cold brown colors. And to ensure that the henna stains the skin for a long time. One of the added ingredients is p-phenylenediamine (ppd), which can cause skin ailments even in very low quantities. That is the reason why you should always perform an allergy test on customers who are having a henna brow treatment for the first time. For the test you also always use one of the dark shades (Dyōtics Ash Brow or Raven or Supercilium Dark Brown). Even if you are actually planning to dye the eyebrows with a light shade.
A patch test is a method to discover if a beauty product or ingredient provokes an allergic reaction on someone’s skin
“But should every customer first come all the way to the salon for an allergy test?” many eyebrow specialists say. Actually, the answer is yes. Although we also understand that this is not always possible. Our tip: make it clear in advance that an allergy test is required first and only wax or thread the brows this time. Or use a regular dye, such as Lash FX. And before you perform the treatment, you do a test. No matter what brand of brow henna you are going to work with.
Patch test: this is how it works
• Prepare Dyotics Brow Henna Ash Brown or Raven, or Supercilium Dark Brown, and apply a small amount to the skin on the inside of the elbow.
• Leave it for about 15-20 minutes and remove with a damp cotton pad and water. If an allergic reaction or visible irritation to skin occurs, rinse immediately and wash the area with water and soap. This customer obviously cannot use brow henna.
• If there is no reaction to the henna within 48 hours, like redness, a burning sensation or itchiness, it can safely be used. Note: A patch-test is no guarantee against future allergies. It is possible for a person to become allergic to a specific substance after the test.
